Angels Drop First to Braves

by @ 8:52 am. Filed under 2008 Angels

Two Angel runs early on wasn’t enough to take the win as Jon Garland and the Angels takes a 2-5 loss.

The Braves got on board with one in the second but the Angels tied it up in the bottom half with a solo shot by Torii Hunter. The Angels took the lead in the third when Howie Kendrick drove an RBI-double to score Maicer Izturis. That would be the only runs the Angels would score, as Jo-Jo Reyes and Jeff Bennett held the Angels to just seven hits on the night. Chone Figgins was back atop the lineup and went 1 for 2 with 2 walks in his first game since May 21.

Jon Garland gave the Braves a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Angels came back to put them on top 2-1 by the third. He then let the lead slip by giving up an RBI-double followed by an RBI-single in the fourth. Garland gave up two more runs in the sixth to Gregor Blanco to make it 5-2 and to end his night. Garland gave up a season-high 12 hits and takes his first loss in eight starts. Darren Oliver and Justin Speier then kept the Braves scoreless for the remaining innings.

The Angels, now back for just the seventh time this season with their regular Opening Day infielders, will look to steal one back from the Braves today. Ervin Santana will go for his ninth win and will face Charlie Morton, who is making his major league debut.
