The Angels lost their first series to an AL team since May 9-11 with a close 4-3 loss in Sunday’s rubber match.
The Angels put up 10 hits, but were only 2 for 13 with RISP, stranding eight men on base. Teixera drove an RBI-single in the first to give the Angels’ their first run before Vlad got an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Cleveland tied it in the bottom half and took the lead in the third before the Angels tied it again with a run in the fifth, Chone Figgins singled and came around to score on a pass ball.
Joe Saunders had a decent outing, giving up three runs on eight hits through five. Justin Speier took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the sixth after a double, sacrifice, and RBI-single.
The Angels head to Tampa Bay for a three game series with the Rays, that is, if Tropical Storm Fay steers clear of Florida. Jon Garland is the scheduled starter and looks to keep his unbeaten streak alive at Tropicana Field. He will face Andy Sonnanstine, who is 12-6 with a 4.35 ERA. The Angels look to recover from their last trip to Tropicana Field in May, where they were swept in a three-game series by the Rays.
