The Angels took a tough 1-2 loss in their opener against the A’s at home, with Jered Weaver getting the loss despite giving up just three hits through seven.
Maybe it was because the lineup was without Anderson or Vlad, or maybe the boys just had an off night, but they could only muster one run on seven hits in the loss. Mike Napoli accounted for the only run, a solo homerun in the sixth, but the Angels would still be down by a run until the end.
Weaver had to suffer his 10th loss despite through seven strong innings, giving up just two runs on three hits. He gave up a solo homerun in the third before throwing a wild pitch in the fourth to score a run and give the A’s a 2-0 lead. He left after seven with a one-run lead, but the Angels couldn’t rally for a comeback to at least hand him the no-decision.
There was no save opportunity for K-Rod in this game, but congratulations to him for being named the AL Player of the Week. He is only one of nine players with 50 saves in a single season, and is the youngest to do so.
The Angels look to even up the series tonight, with John Lackey taking the mound to face lefty Greg Smith. Lackey is coming off a one-run win while Smith is coming off a six-inning shutout.
